Generations of Operating System

  • There are four generation of Operating System

First Generation

  • First generation of operating system was in work while 1940s to 1950s.
  • It was basic batch processing system without any user interface.

Second Generation

  • Second generation of operating system was in work while 1950s to 1960s.
  • It was also batch operating system but it was improvised with multiple jobs in sequence execution feature.
  • It had scheduling and resource management.

Third Generation

  • Third generation of operating system was in work while 1960s to 1970s.
  • It was introduced with time sharing operating system to allow multiple users to interact with computer at the same time.
  • Development of High Level programming languages.

Fourth Generation

  • Fourth generation of operating system is in work since 1980s to present time.
  • It has efficient system management.
  • It includes great user interface with development of high level programming languages with distributed OS.
  • Latest OS like windows, Linux, Mac works with this generation

Fifth Generation (Extra)

  • Fifth generation is upcoming generation in future time.
  • It will include Artificial intelligence with machine learning and advance security features.
  • It will include even better cloud computing with virtualization.
